Sovereign Hill sits on 25 acres of an original gold-mining site in Ballarat, about 90 minutes west of Melbourne. It recreates the town at the height of the 1850s rush — the richest alluvial goldfield the world has ever seen — and it's consistently rated one of Victoria's best family days out.
We suggest leaving Melbourne around 8:30am to arrive as the gates open at 10. That gives you a full day for the mine tour, gold panning, the Red Coat soldiers' musket firing, and the shops and bakeries of Main Street, with time for lunch at one of the town's eateries. Most groups head home around 4–5pm; on the drive back the kids usually sleep, which parents tell us is a feature.
