Melton sits about 35 kilometres northwest of the CBD, right on the western edge of Melbourne where the metropolitan area gives way to farmland. It's the centre of the City of Melton — Woodgrove Shopping Centre, the station, and a rapidly growing ring of suburbs around it including Kurunjang, Brookfield and Harkness.
Everything from Melton is a proper drive. Melbourne Airport is roughly 40 to 45 minutes via the Western Freeway; Avalon is around 40; the CBD is 40 to 50. On trips that long, the difference between a fixed price and a meter isn't academic — one of them changes when you hit traffic on the Ring Road, and the other doesn't. Ours doesn't.
